If you’ve got an air source heat pump, you’ll probably know that your hot water cylinder is an important part of the system.
But once it’s been installed, it’s easy to forget about it.
We’ve had a few customers ask us:
Do heat pump cylinders need servicing?
Can you service my hot water cylinder?
What happens if my cylinder develops a fault?
Does my cylinder need to be serviced for my warranty?
Are your engineers trained to work on unvented cylinders?
The short answer is: yes, looking after your hot water cylinder is important.
Here’s what you need to know.
Does a heat pump cylinder need servicing?
Yes.
Your hot water cylinder is working alongside your heat pump every day, providing the hot water you use for showers, baths, washing up and everything else around the home.
Just because there aren’t any obvious problems doesn’t mean it’s not worth having it checked.
Regular servicing gives an engineer the opportunity to make sure the cylinder and its associated components are working correctly and identify potential problems before they become bigger ones.
It’s much better to find an issue during a routine service than when you turn on the shower and realise you’ve got no hot water.
Why is servicing important?
A heat pump cylinder is an important part of your heating and hot water system, so it’s worth looking after it properly.
A regular service can help:
- Identify potential problems before they become bigger repairs
- Check that the cylinder and associated components are operating correctly
- Spot signs of leaks, wear or damage
- Check safety components
- Make sure the system is operating as it should
- Give you a record of maintenance
- Give you peace of mind that your hot water system has been checked
And if something isn’t quite right, we’ll tell you.
We’d much rather pick up a small issue early than have you dealing with a bigger problem later.
What if my heat pump cylinder needs a repair?
That’s where servicing and repairs go hand in hand.
A service might uncover something that needs attention. Or perhaps you’ve already noticed that your hot water isn’t behaving as it should.
You might find that:
- You’re running out of hot water
- Your hot water isn’t getting as hot as it normally does
- It takes much longer to heat up
- You’re hearing unusual noises
- You’ve noticed water around the cylinder
- Your system is regularly needing a boost
- You’ve got an error or fault showing on your system
Don’t ignore something just because you still have hot water.
Getting a problem investigated early can sometimes prevent a relatively straightforward repair from becoming a much bigger job.
Can you repair heat pump cylinders?
Yes.
This is something customers sometimes don’t realise.
At Mutha Cuva, we service and repair hot water cylinders regularly, including the cylinders that form part of heat pump systems.
So if there’s a problem with your cylinder, you don’t necessarily need to find a separate company that specialises in hot water cylinders.
Our engineers work on heat pumps every day, and that means they’re familiar with the hot water cylinders and associated components that work alongside them.
Are your engineers trained to work on unvented cylinders?
This is a question we’ve been asked by customers, and it’s a good one.
Our engineers are fully trained to work on unvented hot water cylinders.
Unvented cylinders are pressurised systems, so they’re not something you want someone working on without the correct training and understanding.
Our engineers regularly service and repair hot water cylinders, so this is a normal part of the work we carry out.
That means if your heat pump is working but there’s a problem with your hot water cylinder, we’re able to help.
And if there’s an issue that involves both the heat pump and the cylinder, we can look at the system as a whole.
What about my warranty?
This is an important one.
If your heat pump or cylinder is still under warranty, check the manufacturer’s terms and conditions.
Different manufacturers have different warranty requirements, and some may specify servicing or maintenance requirements.
That’s why it’s a good idea to keep your service records.
If you ever need to make a warranty claim, having a record of the servicing and maintenance carried out on your system can be useful.
If you’re unsure what your warranty requires, check the paperwork that came with your system or speak to the manufacturer.
Does servicing keep my warranty valid?
This depends on the manufacturer and the specific warranty.
We wouldn’t want to tell you that every heat pump or cylinder warranty has exactly the same requirements because they don’t.
What we can say is that following the manufacturer’s servicing and maintenance requirements is important.
If your warranty says the system needs to be serviced at particular intervals, make sure you keep up with those requirements.
And keep your paperwork.
It could be useful if you ever need to make a claim.
What happens during a heat pump cylinder service?
The exact checks will depend on the cylinder and system you have.
The purpose of the service is straightforward:
Check that everything is working correctly and identify anything that needs attention.
We’ll also check the relevant safety components and look for signs of leaks, wear or other issues.
If we find something, we’ll explain it to you.
We won’t just throw technical terms at you and leave you wondering what they mean.
We’ll tell you what we’ve found, whether it needs attention and what we’d recommend doing.
Do I need a cylinder service if my heat pump is being serviced?
We’d recommend looking after both.
Your heat pump and hot water cylinder work together, but they’re separate parts of the system.
So having your heat pump serviced doesn’t necessarily mean that every aspect of your cylinder has been checked.
If you’re booking a heat pump service and your cylinder is due a service too, it’s worth asking about having both looked at.
That way, you can have confidence that the whole system is being looked after.
