You’ll need a heat pump service each year to keep your manufacturer’s warranty valid, no matter how old your heat pump is a regular service helps make sure it’s safe and running as it should be.

Heat pump servicing: What’s included, how much it costs & why it matters

Last updated: July 2026

Written by Mutha Cuva, air source heat pump servicing specialists.

If you’ve invested in an air source heat pump, it’s only natural to wonder whether it really needs servicing every year.

We get asked this all the time. Some homeowners assume that because heat pumps don’t have a burner or a flue like a gas boiler, there’s very little to maintain. Others have been told they need an annual service but aren’t entirely sure what they’re actually paying for.

The truth sits somewhere in the middle.

Air source heat pumps are generally very reliable, but they’re still working hard every day. Fans collect dirt, filters become blocked, electrical connections loosen over time, and system settings can drift away from what’s actually best for your home.

A proper service isn’t just about ticking a warranty box. It’s about making sure your heat pump is still operating safely, efficiently and reliably before small issues become expensive ones.

In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what happens during a heat pump service, how often it’s needed, what it costs, and why regular servicing often saves homeowners money in the long run.

What happens during a heat pump service?

A professional air source heat pump service checks that your system is safe, clean, operating efficiently and performing as it should. It includes both visual inspections and functional testing of key components.

Every manufacturer has slightly different service procedures, but on a typical visit we’ll work through checks including:

  • Full visual inspection of the indoor and outdoor units
  • Cleaning the outdoor coil and removing debris
  • Cleaning accessible filters where required
  • Checking the fan and airflow
  • Testing electrical connections and components
  • Inspecting safety controls
  • Reviewing controller settings
  • Checking circulating pumps and water flow
  • Inspecting pipework and insulation
  • Checking expansion vessel pressure where applicable
  • Testing operating temperatures
  • Checking refrigerant operating pressures where appropriate and legally required
  • Looking for signs of leaks, corrosion or developing faults
  • Confirming the system is producing heating and hot water correctly

On paper that looks like a straightforward checklist. In reality, the valuable part is interpreting what we find.

Sometimes everything looks healthy but the system has quietly become less efficient because someone has increased the flow temperature.

Sometimes the homeowner thinks the heat pump is faulty when it’s actually a scheduling or controls issue.

Other times we find the opposite. The customer has simply noticed the system feels “a bit different”, and that’s enough to uncover a circulation issue or an early component failure before it develops into a breakdown.

That’s why experience matters.

If you’d like to know exactly what’s involved, we’ve explained it in more detail in what a proper heat pump service includes.

Do I really need a heat pump service every year?

Short answer

Yes. For most homeowners, an annual service is recommended and is often required to maintain the manufacturer’s warranty.

Many manufacturers specify annual servicing as part of their warranty conditions, although requirements vary between brands. It’s always worth checking your warranty documentation.

Beyond warranty requirements, annual servicing helps identify issues before they become costly repairs.

We often see problems that have been developing quietly for months.

It could be leaves restricting airflow around the outdoor unit.

It could be insulation that’s deteriorated.

It could be a circulation pump beginning to struggle.

None of these necessarily stop the system working immediately, but they all affect efficiency and increase wear over time.

A service also gives you confidence that your system is ready for winter, when demand is highest and breakdowns are least convenient.

If your heat pump hasn’t been looked at for several years, it’s worth considering a professional air source heat pump servicing appointment even if everything appears to be working normally.

Can a service reduce running costs?

Potentially, yes.

A service won’t magically transform a poorly designed heating system, but it can restore efficiency where maintenance issues are causing unnecessary energy use.

For example, restricted airflow across the outdoor coil forces the fan and compressor to work harder.

Incorrect control settings can result in unnecessarily high flow temperatures.

Poor water circulation can reduce overall system performance.

These aren’t always faults that homeowners notice day to day, but they can gradually increase electricity consumption.

One of the questions we often ask during a service is:

“Is the heat pump actually inefficient, or has something changed around it?”

Sometimes it’s the weather.

Sometimes it’s the way the home is being heated.

Sometimes it’s simply overdue a service.

How much does heat pump servicing cost?

At Mutha Cuva, there are two options.

One-off heat pump service

A single air source heat pump servicing visit costs £225.

This suits homeowners who simply want a standalone annual service or may be moving house.

Annual service plan

If you join one of our annual heat pump service plans, servicing becomes much more affordable.

Our plans start from £15 per month, and your annual heat pump service is £90 instead of £225.

For many homeowners who plan to keep their heat pump for years to come, the service plan offers the better long-term value while providing ongoing heat pump aftercare.

If you’re comparing providers, we’ve also explained how much heat pump servicing costs and what influences pricing.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

Short answer

Once every year.

Annual servicing is the industry recommendation and is required by many manufacturers to maintain warranty cover.

People often ask whether winter is the best time.

Actually, we usually prefer servicing during the milder months where possible.

It’s simply easier to work on the outdoor unit when conditions are dry.

Opening electrical compartments in heavy rain isn’t ideal, although if servicing can’t wait, we use suitable rain protection while carrying out the work safely.

The important thing isn’t the exact month.

It’s making sure twelve months don’t quietly become two or three years.

Who is heat pump servicing for?

Our servicing is designed for domestic air source heat pumps, including:

  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Heat pumps connected to hot water cylinders
  • Hybrid systems that combine a heat pump with a boiler

At the moment, we don’t service:

  • Ground source heat pumps
  • Commercial heat pump systems
  • Heat pumps installed in lodges or mobile homes

If you’re unsure whether your system is covered, we’re always happy to advise before booking.

What if my heat pump already has a fault?

A routine service is designed to maintain a working system.

If your heat pump is already displaying fault codes, losing pressure, producing little heat or making unusual noises, it may need investigation before or alongside servicing.

One of the first questions we’ll ask is:

“Is this simply overdue maintenance, or is there an underlying fault?”

Sometimes the answer is obvious.

Sometimes it takes diagnostic testing to separate a genuine component failure from a controls or commissioning issue.

In those cases, our heat pump fault finding and heat pump repairs service is often the best place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a heat pump need servicing if it’s working perfectly?

Yes. Many developing issues don’t immediately affect heating performance. Annual servicing helps identify wear before it becomes a breakdown.

How long does a heat pump service take?

Most domestic air source heat pump services take between one and two hours, depending on the system and whether any issues are found.

Will servicing keep my warranty valid?

Many manufacturers require annual servicing as part of their warranty terms. Always check your specific manufacturer’s documentation.

For general consumer guidance on maintaining heat pumps, see the Energy Saving Trust’s heat pump advice and the Heat Pump Association’s homeowner guidance.

Can I service my own heat pump?

Homeowners can safely keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, vegetation and debris, but a full service should be carried out by a suitably qualified engineer. Refrigeration circuits, electrical components and safety checks require specialist knowledge and, in some cases, legally recognised qualifications.

How do I know if my heat pump needs repairing instead of servicing?

If you’re seeing fault codes, repeated system shutdowns, unusual noises, poor heating performance or hot water issues, the system may require diagnostics rather than routine maintenance.
